his website illustrates a small collection of early primitive clocks
with religious verses on their dials. Interestingly, they all appear to have either come out of the same workshop or have connections with a group of clockmakers known as Founded by clockmaker John Sanderson in around 1690, the school was located at Tiffenthwaite (near Wigton,Cumbria). Tiffenthwaite was a Quaker settlement and had strong connections with George Fox (founder of the Quakers). I believe that many of these early versed clocks - dating from the early 1690’s - could have been made for, and supplied to, the Quaker settlement and non conformists in the Wigton region. These clocks represent the very begginnings of clockmaking in the Wigton area and I hope that viewers find them of some interest.
